Binfield FC manager Mark Tallentire lifted his first piece of silverware as boss on Thursday 12th April 2012, as his side won the The AM Print & Copy Hellenic Floodlit Cup at Fairford Town.
The Moles had a large away following on the day which showed just how well the team had performed all season, and that was evident early on as they looked to dominate their opponents Shortwood United.
Just as Shortwood began to claw their way back into the game, after early Moles dominance, Binfield struck as Carl Davies headed on for Ian Davies who made no mistake, finding the bottom corner from the edge of the box past the dive of Martyn Pearce in the Shortwood net.
As we defended our lead, Shortwood enjoyed the greater possession, but few chances were given up as Dan Weait, making his 60th consecutive Moles appearance in goal, marshalled his defence well.
Indeed the only major scare before half-time came on 34 minutes when Terry Bohane turned and hit a left-foot shot across goal, but narrowly wide of The Moles’ far post.
The second half started much the same way, with Shortwood in possession for good spells, but struggling to break down Binfield’s resolute and tireless banks of four.
Kevin Slack, on for Bohane, quickly got into the action as he flashed a ball across the face of goal, before forcing Weait’s best save of the match, testing the keeper low down.
With United pressing forward, the game started to get stretched – and the Moles would soon take advantage.
Jos Millar broke quickly before playing it through to Ian Davies who did well to beat James Baldwin then outpace him, and although Davies’ initial effort was parried by Pearce, he poked poked home into the empty net.
The Moles dug in for the remaining half hour and did the job without any real scares.
The Moles even had a couple of decent chances to make it three, the best being when Ian Davies just failed to connect with a Carl Davies’ cross.
The final whistle brought wild celebrations for the Moles players, management and supporters as the club ran out two-nil victors on the night with the club’s highest honour to that date, in it’s 120 year history.
It was a big moment as well for the ‘boss’, Mark Tallentire who managed to get his first piece of silverware for the club on a fantastic night for all involved…
