Binfield FC 2-2 Leatherhead – Match report

Binfield FC’s Captain Liam Gavin’s last-minute header earns the Moles a point on the final day of the Isthmian League season.

Liam Gavin’s double including a 91st minute equaliser gave the Moles a point against Leatherhead on the final day of the Isthmian League season.

7th versus 8th on the last game of the season could’ve potentially been seen as a ‘dead-rubber’ but it was anything but. The in-form Leatherhead took the lead in the 5th minute when a ball in from the right found Omarr Lawson who finished well into the bottom left corner – his sixth league goal of the season.

Conceding an early goal seemed to help the Moles find their rhythm and they played all the football for the rest of the half. Brad Pagliaroli went close after a long throw from Massimo Giamattei was headed down by Liam Gavin. The Harry Heath had an effort from the edge of the box after some good work from Harvey Harry but he couldn’t find the target. Pagliaroli forced a good save from Leatherhead keeper Serine Sanneh right on the stroke of half time.

It took until early in the second half but the Moles pressure finally paid off. A short free kick down the right is recycled by Harrison Bayley and he finds Connor Holland who is able to flick the ball back into the box for Liam Gavin to head into an empty net – the ball just crossing over the line.

Both teams then had great chances to take the lead. First, some great work down the left from Heath who worked a bit of space and managed to put in a cross for Harry but he couldn’t quite poke the ball home. Then Leatherhead, from a wide free kick, smacked the post with the ball falling safely. This chance started a large period of pressure by Leatherhead but some resilient defending from the Moles back line kept them out.

This pressure paid off eventually as Leatherhead re-took the lead with just over 10 minutes remaining when Dave Tarpey slotted in his 16th league goal of the season.

With 10 minutes to go, and Binfield needing a goal, we all know the drill – Liam Gavin up front. The Moles came close to an equaliser in the 90th minute when Pagliaroli’s attempted cross came crashing off the bar.

Binfield FC then equalised with minutes of the season remaining when Jonny Denton’s excellent corner was met by Gavin who headed it into an empty net.

The point means the Moles finish sixth. A rollercoaster season but they fought all the way through to the very last minute. Time now for everyone to have some well-deserved time off before getting back to it in pre-season.

Binfield FC Vs Chipstead FC – Match report

Binfield FC Match report – Chipstead Home

Conor Lynch’s twelfth goal of the season was enough to give the Moles all three points against Chipstead ahead of a pivotal week as we approach Isthmian League crunch time at the top of the table…

Binfield, looking to put the disappointment of their Uxbridge defeat behind them, started the better side in Saturday’s match with Chipstead, but struggled to find a breakthrough without creating a clear chance. Both Steve Ngunga and Brad Pagliaroli beat the their corresponding full-backs but couldn’t pick out any Binfield player. Pagliaroli then went close himself when his attempted cross went over the Chipstead keeper Matt Kerbey and off the crossbar after a swift Binfield move.

The Moles took the lead mid-way through the first half and it was no surprise that it came from out wide. Pagliaroli this time was able to pick out Lynch who lost his marker at the back post. He had enough time to bring the ball down and squeeze it inside the front post to give him his twelfth league goal of the season.

Binfield came out the better of the two sides again in the second half when Ngunga drove inside but fired his shot straight at Kerbey. Chipstead then grew into the game and Harvey Rackley-Hayes had to be alert and smother a shot from Andy Somo after a loose pass from George Winser. He then did really well to turn aside Jonathon Hood’s swerving effort.

Chipstead then had a golden opportunity to level the game when Somo was put through one-on-one with Rackley-Hayes but his effort clipped the outside of the post.

The Moles had a great opportunity to wrap up all three points when a short corner found Winser who picked out substitute Harvey Harry but he couldn’t keep his shot down from close range.

Ultimately, another clean sheet and a big three points. That’s one game down, but another two big ones to come as the Moles face Marlow at home on Tuesday before a trip to Leatherhead on the final day of the season.

Binfield FC Floodlit Cup Archives – Shortwood United

Binfield FC manager Mark Tallentire lifted his first piece of silverware as boss on Thursday 12th April 2012, as his side won the The AM Print & Copy Hellenic Floodlit Cup at Fairford Town.

The Moles had a large away following on the day which showed just how well the team had performed all season, and that was evident early on as they looked to dominate their opponents Shortwood United.

Just as Shortwood began to claw their way back into the game, after early Moles dominance, Binfield struck as Carl Davies headed on for Ian Davies who made no mistake, finding the bottom corner from the edge of the box past the dive of Martyn Pearce in the Shortwood net.

As we defended our lead, Shortwood enjoyed the greater possession, but few chances were given up as Dan Weait, making his 60th consecutive Moles appearance in goal, marshalled his defence well.

Indeed the only major scare before half-time came on 34 minutes when Terry Bohane turned and hit a left-foot shot across goal, but narrowly wide of The Moles’ far post.

The second half started much the same way, with Shortwood in possession for good spells, but struggling to break down Binfield’s resolute and tireless banks of four.

Kevin Slack, on for Bohane, quickly got into the action as he flashed a ball across the face of goal, before forcing Weait’s best save of the match, testing the keeper low down.

With United pressing forward, the game started to get stretched – and the Moles would soon take advantage.

Jos Millar broke quickly before playing it through to Ian Davies who did well to beat James Baldwin then outpace him, and although Davies’ initial effort was parried by Pearce, he poked poked home into the empty net.

The Moles dug in for the remaining half hour and did the job without any real scares.

The Moles even had a couple of decent chances to make it three, the best being when Ian Davies just failed to connect with a Carl Davies’ cross.

The final whistle brought wild celebrations for the Moles players, management and supporters as the club ran out two-nil victors on the night with the club’s highest honour to that date, in it’s 120 year history.

It was a big moment as well for the ‘boss’, Mark Tallentire who managed to get his first piece of silverware for the club on a fantastic night for all involved…

Binfield FC FA Vase – History with Deal Town

Binfield FC FA Vase Vs Deal Town

With the professional football pyramid back in full swing after a second covid lockdown, and many semi-professional football leagues announcing a null-and-void season for the second year running, the attention of every club left in the competition turned to The FA Vase, and The Moles did exactly that.

April 2021 felt like a month with a purpose for everyone involved with the club who were determined to ensure that their efforts across the last two years and up until February wouldn’t go to waste, and had planned to go all the way in the league and cup…

Deal Town were the opponents for The Moles who had their eyes on FA Vase success for the first time in their history, a competition where they had met this opponent in two seasons previously. The Moles travelled to Kent to face Deal town in 2012 progressed to the third round after they won 5-2 in normal time.

It was then the 2019/20 season where it took a replay and penalties to decide the better of the two sides. The first tie was a 2-2 draw, played out at The Charles Sports Ground before a replay at Hill Farm Lane ended as 3-3. This meant penalties who would separate the two sides, with Deal Town progressing to the next round after a 7-6 win.

2021 felt like it was redemption time for Binfield, and with the team having to do their whole pre match preparation on the coach ahead of the warm up to ensure covid guidelines were met, it felt like The Moles deserved a win.

The Binfield boys didn’t approach the game like that though, The Moles knew they’d be too good for the team who had so much success against them in the previous year.

The torrential rain in Kent wouldn’t stop Binfield or Ollie Harris, who scored a brace on the day, with his side running out 4-1 victors against the side from Kent who had seen so much success against his Moles the previous year. The win really did feel massive for The Moles as it was a very similar Moles side to the one from the 2019/20 squad, and overcoming that mental barrier is something that massively helped the players throughout their 2020/21 campaign.

Harris scored the pick of the five goals of the game when his 25 yard effort made sure The Moles secured their place in the fourth round of the 2020/21 competition, booking their place alongside thirty one other clubs.
