Whilst it wasn’t to be for our first team today the u16 completed the double with shoot out victory against Penn & Tyler Green in the league cup final at Hill Farm Lane this morning.
A cup final between the top two in the league was always going to be a tight affair and chances in the first half were few and far between.
Penn had the first big opportunity only being denied by a great save from Jack S in the Binfield net. Midway through the half following a fine passing move Will found Freddie on the overlap. He sent in a fine cross but Alfie, who was having a great game, was just unable to convert at the back post.
George F was having an outstanding morning at CB spraying passes to all corners of the pitch with fellow CB Harris winning everything in the air and showing a great first touch to pluck one long ball from the sky.
On numerous occasions Binfield found space in possession with the fullbacks but a lack of movement further up the pitch prevented any significant ball progressions.
A very even first half ended 0-0.
Already missing CB’s Rhys and Evan the Tornadoes were dealt another blow at half time as Harris was unable to continue due to injury after a brilliant first half display.
With the temperature starting to rise the remaining XI dug in and took the lead midway through the second period. An excellent lay off from Lucas found Jack W who burst into the box and slotted home a composed finish for his first goal of the season and first in Binfield colours.
Neither team crated any clear cut chances with both sides continuing to press quickly and deny each other space to play.
Some great skill from Riley on the left almost set Lucas free but yet again some solid defending from Penn prevented the Binfield talisman from getting a shot on target.
With a minute left to play Penn broken down the Binfield left and a great cross was converted to level the scores. A couple of tense minutes followed before the whistle went and it was straight to penalties.
After a game of few shots it was now the chance of the keepers to shine and Jack S certainly did. Penn took first and the Binfield no 1 produced a magnificent save low to his left. Makeshift CB partners Mitch and George both slotted before Jack then saved the 3rd Penn pen to put the young Moles 3-1 up in the shoot out. Having previously been so reliable from the spot Will had his pen saved and Penn made it 3-2. Skipper George M took the 4th and scored so it was left to Tommy to win it. A casual stroll to the spot had the crowd on tenderhooks but there was nothing casual about the finish as he found the net to give the Tornadoes the Trophy.
A magnificent effort from the team to add the League Cup to the League title that was wrapped up week. Well played lads!
