And we are back. The Moles travel to Didcot Town FC in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup.

Who are Didcot Town FC?

Didcot Town Football Club, nicknamed “The Railwaymen” or “Diddy,” was founded in 1907 through the amalgamation of Didcot Village FC and Northbourne Wanderers. Early progress came under club secretary George Smallbone, whose appointment in 1912 brought improved organisation and facilities, allowing the club to compete in local leagues, and the club’s first major trophy followed in 1913 with victory in the North Berks Junior Cup. Didcot rebuilt in the post-war years, becoming founder members of the Hellenic League in 1953 and winning the championship at the first attempt. The club’s finest hour arrived in 2004-05, when, despite being denied the Hellenic League title by a points deduction, they beat AFC Sudbury to win the FA Vase, before going one better the following season by finally claiming the league title, becoming the first team in Hellenic League history to accrue 100 points in a season.

That success earned promotion into the Southern League, and the club has bounced between its divisions ever since, including a spell in the Premier Division from 2009 to 2011 and another from 2023 to 2024 following a play-off win over Ware. Didcot’s league form has been solid rather than spectacular in recent seasons: they finished 11th of 22 in Southern League Division One South in 2024-25, before improving to sixth place in the same division in 2025-26. That upturn hasn’t translated into promotion, however, as league restructuring for 2026-27 sees the club move sideways into the Southern League Central Division One, joining Thame United from the South section rather than moving up a tier.

Moles manager Ross Weatherstone played 25 games for Didcot Town scoring 4 goals in 2006 – his last season before retiring from playing.

FA Cup Record

Didcot’s best performance in the FA Cup was when they reached the 1st round proper in the 2015-16 season. They lost 3-0 to Exeter Town in front of a crowd of 2,707.

The Moles reached the 3rd qualifying round in the 2022-23 where they lost 5-3 away to Beckenham Town. In the second qualifying round, they beat National League South side Tonbridge Angel.

In last years competition, Didcot reached the 1st Qualifying Round losing to Poole Town in a replay whilst the Moles reached the Preliminary Round losing 2-1 to Marlow FC.
